Over this past year I have blogged about the things going on in my life - my chickens, rabbits, garden, pets, cooking, sewing - just a little of everything. So doing a recap isn't really necessary.
It has been a good year with all its ups and downs. Hubby and I are healthy and able to function and as we get older that pretty much says it all. Hubby has now lost about 80 pounds which is a big plus and I have gained about 8 (all while what I consider dieting). "Mama always said" it would all catch up with me - for so many years I weighed 112 pounds and at 5'8" I was really thin! It didn't happen at 40 like "Mama always said," but it did happen! I feel the aches and pains of the good times of my life and the bad times of my life. I make no excuses - I am what I am and God loves me even though I am not perfect.
I started the year trying to increase my chicken flock. I hatched and babied those little balls of fluff for weeks. I had 32 biddies for a while, then the dogs came and demolished about half. then the snakes came and demolished the other half. Sick at heart I replaced the little ones with lovely Barred Rocks. These ladies are so gentle and loving and fit right in to our little flock. Matilda, my old Rhode Island Red hen, accepted them aboard while maintaining her position as the head of the pecking order.
I have a special pair of Grays that are so beautiful. I hatched them and raised them separately from the rest of the flock. I will lose the beautiful rooster this week when he goes to the sale barn. The rooster's name is Ming Ming and the hen is Tuck. The oldest granddaughter named them as soon as they hatched and even though the sexes don't reflect the names - it is what it is. Ming Ming tried to flog the older of the youngest granddaughter last week and then yesterday tried to flog the youngest granddaughter. Ming Ming is too young as yet to have dangerous spurs, but his spurs are rapidly growing and with his temperment, he has to go. The grandchildren love to play outside and I won't tolerate an agressive animal.
In the Spring, the oldest granddaughter decided she wanted a rabbit, so hubby added not one but three to the menagerie. Lost one of those within two weeks but replace her with a fostor from Atlanta that was someone's pet. Now down to two and they run loose in the barn and are very content until the neighbors dogs come snooping. I really wish people would raise their pets not to get into other peoples business.
I had a fruitful early garden and filled the freezer up while enjoying all the fresh vegetables throughout the summer. I don't can much anymore, but may have to reconsider with the coming season. Hubby has already turned loads of leaves and mulch back into the soil in anticipation of the upcoming planting season.
The youngest granddaughters and I planted trash can potatoes, but we waited a little too long to plant and only harvested a couple of handfuls of small spuds. They will be great with a pot of green beans though, so all is not lost and the experiment was good for us all. Plan to try the trash can pototoes again in early March.
This fall has brought my deer back. They enjoy the huge acorn crop we have behind the house and will graze on the nuts for at least an hour a day and sometime longer. I manged to get some good pictures of them last week and where there were only three, a new beauty joined them. One day and young buck stepped in to enjoy the fare. I cringe every time I hear a shot behind the house, as I fear a hunter as downed one of my babies.
I retired this year and was happy to do so. I really enjoy staying at home and diddling with my cooking, sewing, animals, and garden. I could keep working and Hubby and I could stash the dollars toward future travel, but I watch so many that save and save and then are unable to do the things they saved to do. I wrote about my cataract sugery in an earlier blog, but I am still pleased with my much improved sight.
I spend loads of time with my youngest granddaughters and enjoy every minute. I am bowled over by my oldest grand children every time they visit. Living north of Atlanta, I only see them every six weeks or so and they change so fast. Phone calls are just not the same. They are both so bright and talented!
My parents are aging fast and it hurts my heart to see them struggle to perform even the most routine tasks. They were both so active and energetic during their younger years.
I experienced losses and gaines during the year which is part of living. I have seen new little ones come into the world, couples pledging solemn vows to each other before God, and have seen close friends and family lose the ones they love. I have contemplated the whys of life and am still uncertain that I have accomplished what I am suppose to accomplish.
Cleaning is calling, so until next time . . .
Happy New Year and

Changes - Not Just The Weather
I have always considered myself computer savvy - not an expert by any means, but I can get around pretty well as an operator and can do some light trouble shooting. About a month ago, my power source started to go out. How did I know it was the power source - I don't know I just did. And how did I know it was about a month ago - I did a backup on the day the trouble started. Okay, that was the only smart thing I did. I did not back the computer up and run it down to Bestech and get a new power source installed - no I just went right on piddling with my system until last Sunday when I could piddle no more! The computer wouldn't even blink an eye at me - no grinding of gears, or whistling of motors - just nothing. I believe we can get too comfortable with our routine and God just shakes the limb a little to either make us grip the limb or change our position.
Hubby has been talking of getting a laptop, so he says we'll just go get a laptop. Oh! Just go get a laptop. Husband are so definitive in their thinking. We did and I have now spent the last 8 days getting the printer drivers (the printer is out of date and it took me forever to find the drivers for the Windows 7) installed, looking for files I had saved to the thumb drive and trying to restore a backup from an old WindowsXP to a new Windows 7 - it don't work. Luckily, once the power source is replaced in the old computer, I should be good to go on the files.
Not much is different with the Windows 7 but the design and I am sure the inner workings are a bit undated. I enjoy it a great deal. The laptop itself takes some getting use to since the mouse pad is super touchy and I zoom in and out with knowing how I did it or why or I end up way up the page and really mess up my spreadsheets. I attached my other mouse for ease of use, but I really want to learn to operate this baby like it was built to operate.
If you add on and take away, something gets loss. That is like disconnecting all the bells and whistles on a new car rather than getting to know the car and why those extras are so special. BUT, I am learning and rather enjoying the process. The thing I miss most are all my little bookmarks of my favorites on the Internet. I have a routine every morning of cranking the "puter" up and checking all the local papers on line and then I hit the obits of the local funeral homes. I know that sounds rather morbid, but I have to make sure I made it through the night!
So many changes and important events are developing right now and nosy old me has to read up on everything. Then on to Face Book so I can catch all my friends and their doings for the day and then I try to write a little every day don't always make it but, I try. Everything I write doesn't make it to the Blog though, so don't be judging by what is on here - some of that stuff is old and I really need to do some rewrites!
Friday was a most enjoyable day with my youngest grandchildren - special lunch and then to the park. I will miss them this week as they are on fall break and I won't get to see them everyday, but it will give me some catchup time. I have certainly neglected my major housecleaning this summer as I played with the girls all summer.
As the trees have started shedding their coats, we covered the pool this weekend until the leaves are gone. It looks so desolate when it is covered. Hubby said he would take the cover off later in the year, but I couldn't keep up with all the leaves - I dip - they fall, I dip - they fall. After Thanksgiving I will mulch most of them for the shrubbery and the rest will go on the garden for next spring's planting. I have to burn that garden spot off first - did that last year and it took care of most of the pests this year. Since we plant an early garden, we miss the pests that like the hot days of mid to late summer. I fair better also as I can not work in the heat.
My maternal first cousins get together every three months to keep in touch. For one reason or another, I have missed the first two get togethers so I am so looking forward to seeing the crew in November. The first of us died a year ago and her husband wanted to get to know her cousins better and suggested this as a way of keeping in touch and his asking questions and learning our personalities. I liked the man when I first met him and I like him even more for caring enough to make an effort. I have two cousins who are a great distance from us and we don't get to visit so often, but then there are cousins just up the road that we don't see so often either.
I told a good friend the other day - we are just trying to live. I know that isn't quite right, but it pretty much describes our comings, goings, or just staying home.
Until next time . . .
Happy reading!

Remember when . . .
When I went to school our first day of the school year would either be the Tuesday after Labor Day or the Friday after Labor Day. It also signalled the end of summer and the beginning of those wonderful fall mornings. We always needed sweaters for our trip to school and had them wrapped around our waists on the trip back home. After the long hot summers of middle Georgia, we welcomed the cool morning temperatures. Many years have past since the calendar and the weather matched my school day memories, but I do believe we are getting back on track this year. Forecasts call for cooler days in the coming week and the mornings have already began with cooler temperatures.
Rain is coming and my dead grass and garden are jumping with anticipation - or is that me hopping around getting ready? I hope that we receive enough to nourish the roots through our upcoming winter so my plants will flourish in the Spring. March, April and May are my revitalized months; welcomed with anticipation that yes, I did survive another cold bleak winter. September, October and November are my getting prepared to rest months and finish all my summer chores. I love these six months more than any other. I don't function well in the heat of summer nor the cold of winter. I will be sorry to see the pool close for the year. the kids have progressed greatly this summer in their swimming abilities and their diving is getting is much better.
I am looking forward to a fall filled with sewing for my girls and keeping the fall garden going. Hope it provides as well as the summer garden. We have been eating good!
A last summer trip from my grandchildren to the north, this weekend has been filled with bonding, eating and swimming. A fun Labor Day weekend with lots of hugs for Nanna.
As our world turns and until next time . . .

Alabama
Hubby and I travelled to Alabama over the weekend for the wedding of a dear cousin and his lovely bride. We met a lot of terrific people whose company we enjoyed all weekend. The food at both the rehearsal dinner and the reception was exceptional. The bride and groom entertained through all the festivities and still managed time for each other. A lot of good memories were established by this unique pair. Their love for each other, their God, their family and their friends was expressed throughout the rehearsal, wedding and reception. I came home feeling blessed to have witnessed the occasion.
Mother's Day was bittersweet as I was not with either of my children as hubby and I travelled home. Spoke with both though and I know as they know they are very much loved and have given me great joy. I feel blessed to have such a wonderful daughter and daughter-in-law. They are both good mothers, wives and daughters. The same applies to my son and son-in-law. I know I have the love of my family and I can think of no greater gift on Mother's day.
I received a most delightful tub of Impatiens from my youngest granddaughters. Impatiens is my most favorite summer flowers. Also known as jewel leaf, this is one of my favorite herbs as it has both aesthetic and medicinal value. Whether the girls realized the double value of their gift is doubtful, but that tub sure made me smile!
Before I close this little note I feel the need to ask for prayers for the people of Alabama. The tornado damage is very widespread in this state as we witnessed through our drive through central and north Alabama. I have been told that the southern parts of the state were damaged much worse than the areas I saw. An insurance adjuster I spoke with during my stay said the damage was more like the results of a hurricane. Recovery is still on going and many people are still homeless and doing without.
Until next time . . .

Winter brings out my creativity. Housebound and staying close to the fire, I have been steadily making berets for my girls. Last night I decided to try a sun bonnet for the upcoming gardening season and I am very pleased with the results - if I could only find a way to put cool air in the crown to keep it a bit cooler. See, we are never happy - when we are cold, we long for warmth and when we are hot, we long for cool air. My new projects have brought me a lot of joy and I have loads of new ideas for hat projects for both summer and winter. I also hope to make the girls some sundresses and jumpers if I can make myself get to it. I love jumpers on little girls - plain or ruffly they are so feminine and little girly.
My grandchildren from the north finally dug out of the snow and travelled south for a visit. We had a great time and spent some bonding time together. I think my heart can rest now for another few weeks when they return. It isn't only my northern grandchildren that drives me to the brink, but the two that live only 5 miles away cause my heart great turmoil when I don't get a visit for a couple of weeks. They grow and mature so fast I feel I am missing something very important during the time we are apart. Yes, I am addicted to being a grandmother.
The full moon was especially pretty last night. The air was clear and crisp and the moon beams were extra sparkly. I like to think it was due to the outpouring of love in our little community. We lost two young girls this week, both due to tragic accidents. For a change the people of our town expressed kindness and sympathy rather than the hateful attitudes normally displayed. The loss of two so young is hard to understand, but God is so much wiser. Knowing he has a plan makes the loss just a tad easier but the loss still leaves a yearning in our hearts. I wrote earlier on how my heart aches when my grandchildren are away, but I can not fathom the thought of never seeing them again. My thoughts and prayers have been with the family and friends of these two girls.
We had a wood cutting party this weekend. Some of the men and young men gathered for the felling of the trees. The young men received valuable lessons in the proper way to split wood and everybody that had the desire had a turn. Before the session was over, most were rather proficient at the task and we now have an abundance of wood and some travelled home with those in need. My nephew made the comment that he had never had as much fun cutting wood, so I guess the day was a success. Hubby says we are in for more snow or ice before the winter season is over and I have a feeling he may be correct. I guess I should restock the freezer with soup fixings because when the weather turns bad we focus on keeping warm and feeding our tummies.
I had to threaten my parents over the icy days not to darken the door or even think about it. They have a tendency to think they are still 30 years old and can still get around like spring chickens. Neither can stand very well without support and cannot see more than a foot in front of them, so they were destined for disaster if they had gone out. All went well, however, and they didn't even lose electricity. Dad is already wanting spring to arrive so he can get to the garden. It isn't going to happen, but it doesn't hurt to wish. More and more of his memories are of his childhood at his grandparent's home. It is surprising what he can remember from way back when, but can't remember what he ate for lunch. At 87 I am surprised he remembers anything.
That about catches us up and I really need to get back to my sewing. Thanks for dropping by and until next time . . .

Innocent - I Don't Think So!
My granddaughters range in age from 8 to 5 to almost 4. The two older girls come directly to me with their requests for candy, popsicles, cookies, drinks or whatever they think they must have at the time. The youngest however, stands back to get my reaction and if it is a negative response, she bypasses me to either her Dad, Mom, or Aunt Jenn. (PawPaw gets bypassed also as he thinks just like Nanna).
As I sat rocking while watching and listening to their play, the older girls came running to ask for a fudgesicle. Having just finished dinner with desert, I told them they could have one later, but not right now. They ran back to their play passing little bit on the way. Apparently they advised her enroute that the answer was no. she bypasses me and headed for the door only to be met by Mama. Trying her best to keep Mama inside rather than out, she started with "I want" only to be rudely interrupted by Nanna. It didn't work this time. Her Dad was sitting at the patio table and we laughed at her attempt to outsmart me which really made her mad. Off she went to play with the older girls, crestfallen that she didn't win this time either. By the way, they did get their ice cream later.
I want to point out that it isn't always the youngest that is the manipulator. It swaps around as to what is wanted and who feels like the best negotiator at the time. Sometimes they even recruit the grandson as the negotiator and at twelve he has experience and knowledge the other three are lacking.
I can see that their parents are in for a hard time as they get older. Girls have a tendancy to stick together and try to reason things out, whereas a girl and a boy pretty much go their own way and they get what they get. Conspiracy against adults is not a new thing. My sister and I did the same thing. Our only problem was our interest did not follow the same routes.
I always loved to ride and Mom and Dad's Sunday afternoon jaunts were exciting for me, however my sister would get car sick and didn't enjoy the riding at all. Our annual trips to Daytona Beach were all started at night so Sis would go to sleep leaving Mom and Dad to enjoy the long ride. But that didn't mean that we didn't conspire on other issues.
It is a pleasure to watch them grow, to experience the expansion of their minds and their desires for their future. It will be interesting to see if they follow their dreams or find other areas of interest that side tracks them from their goals. Of course at this young age, they are limited to their exposure to what the world holds.
Thanks for sharing with me this morning and until next time . . .

Setttling In
My grandchildren have returned from summer camp in Missouri, so my anxiety level has dropped tremendously. I am so glad they are once again, if not with me, at least within driving distance of a couple of hours. I will spend time with them over the next few days and be restored once again.
My class reunion was terrific. The short visit that we shared was so enjoyable and it was a blessing to hear the testimonies of so many. The majority of our rebellious group of graduates have turned their focus toward God, family, and community (which is now worldwide). As I looked around and watched my many classmates, I realized that I only had a close relationship with a handful of people, but I considered all of them friends. I didn't detect not the first bit of animosity or trepidation of the part of my fellow classmates and everyone seemed truly happy to be part of this event.
The smiling face of Ricky T., the sparkling eyes of Mike C., the smiling faces of Carol H., Susan D., Darlene P., Mary Ann J., Pam P., and on and on, was a wonder to watch. Some of these people had not changed one bit - Carole Ann G. knows the secret to the fountain of youth - but some I would never have known. Warren H. and wife Camilla were the same as 41 years ago as was Rhonda P. Faye and Kaye exhibited the same enthusiasm as I remember in school and shared their love and excitement of the event. Next time we would like to add some of old teachers to the mix - that should add even more flavor to our pot!
I have re-established contact with these people and have no intention of losing them again. We will move on with each of our lives, but we have added a few old friends back in the mix and they fit just fine! Thank you Dawn C. for all your work, your tenacity, and your motivation to keep going and move forward.
I am now ready to move on to other projects I have put on hold. It will be a busy summer! July 4th is coming up this weekend. It is shaping up to be fun filled and busy! A lot going on to celebrate the birth of our great country. July 4, 1776 seems a long time ago, but the impact of the actions taken by our founding fathers and the dreams they had for this country will be everlasting. It took many years to attain our freedom and to establish the groundwork of this great nation. It is a time for coming together and remembering what this nation stands for amid the tumult and desperation many of our countrymen are now facing. It has been a long time since the people of this country stood behind a common goal and I am afraid there are wolves in sheep's clothing trying to get a foothold in our government.
My daughters' birthday is July 3rd so we will be celebrating double on that day. Goodness, time sure flies. It seems only yesterday that I rocked a tiny bundle to sleep while singing "You Are My Sunshine." I thank God for her and her brother. They have both taught me a lot and been a true blessing in my life.
A little bit of rain last night will put me in gear next week to get the garden worked, picked and some things replanted. With more rain in the forecast for today, it will be a busy time. Any ideas on how to get rid of the poison ivy that is growing like wildfire in my yard this year? I know - very carefully! I have several shoots that have really taken over, but as allergic as I am to the sap, I have been hesitant to try to move it to the burn pile.
Well, I have much to do and little time to accomplish all the things on my list. Until next time . . .
Happy reading!

Happy Friday!
Oh how my girls are growing! Today, my middle granddaughter graduated from pre-K. Her learning journey has just begun and I can't wait to see her inquisitive little mind develop and grow. Of course she is smart, being my granddaughter, but now we will watch and wait for the twists and turns her little mind takes.
My oldest granddaughter turned 8 on Friday. Growing much too fast for Nanna, she is growing into quite a young lady. Demure and quiet, she will astound you with her voracity when provoked. Looking very elegant and poised she can climb at tree, hike, and tussel with the best of them and then grab her fishing pole ready to bring in the big one.
My grandson, now 12 is changing rapidly. Not only is his facial features becoming more refined, his mind is working differently as his body is growing. So proud of the young man he has become!
My youngest is the joy of all of them, as she still has enough baby to drive you crazy, but filled with love and happiness that will melt your heart. She absorbs everything the three older ones say or do. She has my temper and will throw a fit in a minute, then fling her little arms around your neck and make you do exactly what she wants.
I am so enjoying my grandchildren this weekend, but while they are fishing and camping, I wanted to share a minute with you. My wish for all is a fun filled happy Memorial Day. I thank each of you who served in our armed services for the part you have played in keeping our country free and safe. To the families that have lost a loved one in service, I wish for you peace in the knowledge that your loved one gave themselves for the freedom and rights of others.
Happy Memorial Day to All!

Kids Are Coming!
My quarterly visit from my grandchildren from the north is happening this coming week! This is really a joke as I do get to see them about every 3-4 weeks, but it just seems like it is only 4 times a year!
My Boy Scout grandson and my clogging granddaughter seem to grow at least 3 or 4 inches between each visit. Growing up and will soon beg not to have to go to Nanna's. Thank you Jesus for a loving and caring daughter that drags them south to make sure Nanna and PawPaw are okay! My children are the most wonderful children in the world and I am blessed that they are both good providers and loving parents.
I am almost done with my major chores so my time can be spent visiting with them and storing up until the next visit.

Happy Mother's Day
Today is the day of Thanksgiving for the Mother's of this world. For me it is a day of Thanksgiving for my children and grandchildren. The times of getting up in the middle of the night, getting through the terrible twos, the sometimes terrific threes, the sickness, the injuries, the stubbornness, all the trials and tribulations of childhood are forgotten by the smiles on the faces of just one accomplishment. The minutes, hours, and days of happiness and joy brought about by a child are irreplaceable.
I am proud of the people that my children have become in spite of my inexperience. My children have provided me with the greatest gift I could ever receive and that is my grandchildren. To my son-in-law and daughter-in-law, thank you for being the parents that you are and instilling in my grandchildren the joy of living and the love of God.
I thank you!
To the rest of you Mother's and Grandmother's out there I hope you have a peaceful, joy filled day. Some of you have children and grandchildren serving our country on foreign lands and will not be seeing them this year on this special day. My prayer for you and them is for a safe and happy day. May they return to you unharmed with a smile on their face and joy in their hearts.

I have had a most enjoyable few days with my oldest grandchildren. My grandchildren never cease to amaze me with the way their wonderful minds work. None of the four are alike, but all seem to play well together and other than vying for the attention of either their PawPaw or myself, entertain each other well. I believe my grandson will probably be a writer (he has the most vivid imagination) or any attorney. He informed me this weekend that he was descended from Al Capone through my grandparents - he explained it all to me as we all had a great laugh over his tale, but alas, there is no way. He and my youngest granddaughter can take a little bit of information and build a huge story out of it - the facts get a little scrambled, but the story is there.
I could sit and listen to them for hours. It is so amazing at the things that draw their attention and how they process, interpret and relay information. I am so pleased at their level of maturity and ability to ask intelligent questions and comprehend information. Yeah, I know I am prejudice, but that is the perogative of a grandmother.
As I had business at the Clerk of Court's Office this week they accompanied me. They had a great time meeting friends at the Courthouse, touring the building, and getting a quick explanation of what each office was responsible for and how the court system worked . Then we made a trip to the Old Jail Museum and was given a great tour courtesy of the curator. The curator is the most knowledgeable person around for the history of our area and she is not even a native of our county.
The following day, they toured the local cemetaries, located an old tobacco drying barn and last but definitely not least visited the new Super Wal Mart in Forsyth. It was a full afternoon, but an enjoyable one. My grandson enjoyed meeting family almost everywhere we went and was even invited to a cousin's house to ride a goat. I am sure that goat will still be waiting when he makes his next trip south and the invitation will still be open.
It is a secure and comforting feeling to know that so many people know you or are related to you in an area. It gives you a connection that provides stability and security. It is something that is so often taken for granted, but is so precious.
Thanks to the ever expanding flock of chickens, there is work to do tomorrow, so I will close for now. Until next time,

Merry Christmas!
Christmas arrived quickly for me this year and I know it will be gone just as fast. I wish for each and everyone of you a joyful and safe Christmas.
Our Christmas tradition of visiting with my parents on Christmas eve will prevail once again. My parents are much older now and the revelry of so many children, spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren put them on edge after a short time, but we want and need to spend those joyful moments with them. We don't linger as we once would for fear of tiring them out, but they have given up their tradition of visiting all the little ones on Christmas morn so on Christmas eve we celebrate with the people that started this group called our family.
We will eat too much, as always. Our hearts will be full from the twinkling of those innocent eyes and the wonder expressed with each package they receive. Oh! How I wish for the innocence of a child.
I miss my daughter and my oldest grandchildren terribly, but look forward to seeing them after the first of the year.
Thank you for allowing me to share a small portion of my thoughts and my life over the past few months. It has been an enjoyable year of discovery and peace in my journey to rediscover myself.
Again, I wish for you a safe and Merry Christmas!
