On the cusp

Another end to this thing called winter is fast approaching and while the fall and early winter were relatively mild, the end has been fierce with its gusting winds and frigid air.  Those who read my blog regularly know that February is my least favorite month, but it is there so there you go! There are things in life that must be dealt with and deal with it we shall!

According to the knowledgeable meteorologist, we are to have a pollen burst (whatever that is) brought on by the early warm temperatures followed by the recent frigid temperatures. Every spring is a pollen burst when plagued with allergies.  One can only hope that the "burst" will be fast and short!

My car is already tarnished with a coat of yellow which definitely does not accentuate the carbonite gray nor is it a welcome accessory to the matte black interior (doesn't matter if the windows are never down, the crap sneaks in through the air ducts!).

Anxious for the warming temps and visions of summer, hubby and I uncovered the pool and BAM! the frigid temps rolled in and picking those dreams right out of the air and scattering them northward! As much as I would love a thick blanket of snow, it is too close to Spring for me to welcome it with bated breathe and open arms.

I trimmed the dead protective leaves of my banana tree right before this perilous weather and sit here wondering if those lovely green leaves will make a comeback giving my little feathered friends a perch when the weather does warm.  Most of the fruit trees and flowering shrubs bloomed only to  freeze in these devilish temps leaving it iffy if there will be pears or plums this year with few if any azaleas.

Yes, I am tired of soups and breads (potato, broccoli and cheese, cabbage and sausage, chili, vegetable, taco) I crave grilled chicken, steak, salmon and even burgers with a fresh salad on the side!

I am ready to say goodbye to winter and "Hello" Spring! Thanks for visiting and remember to

Keep Smilin!

Anticipation
. . . waiting for the first snowflake of the season to hit the ground

Yes, here in middle Georgia (known for our mild winters and scorching summers) are waiting with bated breathe the journey of those snow clouds and anxiously await the fall of that first flake. Knowing in our hearts that 30 minutes or less we will be begging for it to be over.  We are not made for the fluffy white stuff except for those daredevils that attack the blanket with their monster machines turning the fluffy into slushy within seconds.

Content with the comfort of a warm fire and a cup of soup I sit here realizing I have aged not only in years but also in spirit - as once I would be in the middle of the skirmish, rolling in the snow, building snowmen, climbing the mountain in the four wheel drive. Good memories, but no do overs.

Happy rolling - whether on a sled, vehicle, or trash can lid! Be safe and have fun!

The warm Spring like temperatures in Middle Georgia have inhibited my creativity as far as inside projects are concerned.  Usually my writing and sewing are done on those cold wet days of winter we haven't experienced this year.  I keep telling myself the cold is coming but the days are flying by and except for a night or two my toes are still warm!
So the sewing is still packed away in containers and Zeb (I do believe he is swimming around in the pool right now) and Lizzy (sunning on the back deck) are patiently waiting on the sidelines waiting for my next adventure.  I thought to go back to the original stories and edit them into something resembling grammatically correct writing, but I decided to leave them be and let these be a teaching tool for young writers.  I am sure they will get a lot practice correcting my punctuation and sentence structure.

I am getting a little antsy though, so regardless of the temperatures and sunshine, I may have to stay in and do some sewing.

I read Christopher Paolini's last book, Inheritance, over the last week.  I know this is suppose to be the end of the series, but as with a good many books I have read, I hope there will be a sequel.  Fantasy is fantasy and I can make up any ending I want to the story!

Over the past year I have continued to connect with those I not only graduated with, but also those shared the start of my educational journey.  I have found it takes only a spark to bring forth the memories of those days so long ago.  I know it is good for the heart and maybe it will keep my brain alert a little longer!

My writing time is up!  Just an update - my parents are hanging in there and still getting around, albeit slowly.  Mom gave us all a laugh at dinner on Sunday when she lost a cap on her front tooth and was afraid she had swallowed it.  All our little ones were aghast when she smiled and had no tooth!  The cap was found on her plate and she is in the process of restoring her beautiful smile.  Dad really got a chuckle out of this one!

Time seems to fly at the times we wish it would stand still.

Around the Corner

Time is speeding by, whether this is due to my age and me moving somewhat slower or whether everyone else has sped up, but regardless the days are not marching but racing toward . . . something! Goodness, it seems only yesterday we were celebrating the beginning of a new year and now we are in the middle of the month.

We are just a couple of weeks away from starting our indoor seed beds for those plants yearning to be given a chance to flourish and produce. As I have stated before February is my month of depression. Not yet the end of the cold, wet and windy weather that keeps me inside and not yet the beginning of the warm spring temperatures that so heal my mind.

I have tried in the last few years to save some of my more interesting projects for the month of February to keep me busy and my mind stimulated. Planning my garden is probably foremost on my mind. I actually have two gardens - one for vegetables and one for herbs.

As I have aged, I have searched and researched methods to reduce the physical labor needed for a productive garden. As much as I enjoy neat and clean rows, mulching reduces much of the labor and results in happier and healthier plants and saves my back from much bending and pulling.

March is my month of renewal. The later part of the month always brings the first warm days as we start our turn toward the sun. I watch the temperatures change as we slowly make our turn back to the sun and the warmth motivates me once again. I probably should just hibernate from December through March! Spring cleaning come early here as the outside starts calling to me around the end of March when everything must be prepared for the spring days. My anticipation grows as I wait for my hummingbirds to return so I can watch their antics. I scour the garden for the first peek of green shoots hoping that I haven't lost too many plants over the harsh winter that has been so rough on humans and animals alike.

April arrives awakening all living things and I smile from inside. The month of showers doesn't bother me as I know God is watering his plants and bringing joy to my heart. The ground has warmed and the air is refreshing.

And then right around the corner . . .

It's Here

It is freezing outside! So cold that even my demonic animals are inside by the fire (and it has been gong constantly). The wind is sending daggers of cold right through the body making all barriers useless. The promise of snow later in the week brings a smile to my face until I open the door and slide into the frigid air.

In 1984 we hosted a New Year's Eve party in 4 degree weather. Everyone was gathered around the fire and still froze. Worst party I have ever had the pleasure to attend much less give. At midnight, everyone rushed to their warming vehicles to escape the angry weather making it the shortest party ever for this celebration. Strangely enough it warmed up a great deal with the departure of the guest. Believe me cold doesn't always mean snow, so there was no reason to keep opening and shutting the door to "see if it's snowing".

Well, for those of you who think we must have 3-5 days of freezing temperatures to kill the insects - we should not have any bugs, insects or anything else for the next year or two after this weeks temperatures. Do you think it will drive the armadillos south again?

Those beautiful palms that I refused to put in the ground year before last and now in the ground and will probably perish after this front finishes dumping its icy temps. I look for them to jump out of the ground and run back to Jekyll and the warm soil of the coast. I think it will be safe now to prune the trees and shrubs and shape them up for a beautiful spring. Surely the sap raced down the stems to escape the wintry blasts.

My grandchildren are on the way and I am so happy! I will fill their little tummies with good gooey chocolate pies and fruity strudels. There is so much I need to share with them and I will have only a few days in which to catch up and build memories. I so need to see the sparkle in my daughters eyes and hear her joyful laugh.

I know I have rambled a bit tonight. I lost a most important and longtime friend this New Years. I had things to tell him before he left us and so many things to thank him for before asking God to take special care of him. Life was not always good to our friend, but then God knows that and will grant him peace. Hubby and I spent a day in remembrance and thankfulness for our friend - so many years takes a little bit of time - but we enjoyed the journey and we enjoyed the friend.

Thank you for returning to check on me and my thoughts. They will come back together over the next few days and maybe the writing will be more sensible.

Remember, you can't build a future if you live in the past. Move forward, thank God and be nice!

Winter Is Upon Us

The fog moved in last yesterday afternoon and my mind automatically kicked into the "I don't want to" mode. I don't want to go out. I don't want to go shopping. I don't want to feed the chickens. I don't want to go out to eat.

Rain, fog, cold, snow and ice are the triggers for my "I don't want to mode". I am not afraid of any of these weather conditions, it is just a comfort thing for me. Hot tea, warm soup, lap blanket, pillow and a good book or movie - my comfort mode.

It looks like I am in for a comfort winter. The rain seems to go on and on, but I won't complain. We had too many thirsty years to resent the rain now. Hope to see some snow this year, but really don't want to see the ice.

Ice is really beautiful (like the snow) for about 15 minutes. It takes that long to realize there is no water or no electricity - comfy things cease to exist until the ice starts to melt. It has taken several days afterward before electricity is back. The snow is not nearly as bad, but after an hour or so, it is just messy. No, that is why we live in a nice warm climate instead of the icy cold of our northern states.

Our northern neighbors must be much more industrious than us southerners or they were all Boy Scouts. They stay prepared for that snow and icy stuff. Here in the south we are too laid back for winter's special sports. We can mud bog any time of the year and clean up with a hose pipe. No special equipment needed either - or pickup trucks work just fine!

If the winter is as mild as our fall, we don't have anything to worry about. It is suppose to be in the low 60s today and we have hit the middle of December with only 4 frosty days to date. Sounds like spring is around the corner.

Enjoy your Holiday season and here's to wishing each and everyone of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy, but please stay safe.
