I have always considered myself computer savvy - not an expert by any means, but I can get around pretty well as an operator and can do some light trouble shooting. About a month ago, my power source started to go out. How did I know it was the power source - I don't know I just did. And how did I know it was about a month ago - I did a backup on the day the trouble started. Okay, that was the only smart thing I did. I did not back the computer up and run it down to Bestech and get a new power source installed - no I just went right on piddling with my system until last Sunday when I could piddle no more! The computer wouldn't even blink an eye at me - no grinding of gears, or whistling of motors - just nothing. I believe we can get too comfortable with our routine and God just shakes the limb a little to either make us grip the limb or change our position.
Hubby has been talking of getting a laptop, so he says we'll just go get a laptop. Oh! Just go get a laptop. Husband are so definitive in their thinking. We did and I have now spent the last 8 days getting the printer drivers (the printer is out of date and it took me forever to find the drivers for the Windows 7) installed, looking for files I had saved to the thumb drive and trying to restore a backup from an old WindowsXP to a new Windows 7 - it don't work. Luckily, once the power source is replaced in the old computer, I should be good to go on the files.
Not much is different with the Windows 7 but the design and I am sure the inner workings are a bit undated. I enjoy it a great deal. The laptop itself takes some getting use to since the mouse pad is super touchy and I zoom in and out with knowing how I did it or why or I end up way up the page and really mess up my spreadsheets. I attached my other mouse for ease of use, but I really want to learn to operate this baby like it was built to operate.
If you add on and take away, something gets loss. That is like disconnecting all the bells and whistles on a new car rather than getting to know the car and why those extras are so special. BUT, I am learning and rather enjoying the process. The thing I miss most are all my little bookmarks of my favorites on the Internet. I have a routine every morning of cranking the "puter" up and checking all the local papers on line and then I hit the obits of the local funeral homes. I know that sounds rather morbid, but I have to make sure I made it through the night!
So many changes and important events are developing right now and nosy old me has to read up on everything. Then on to Face Book so I can catch all my friends and their doings for the day and then I try to write a little every day don't always make it but, I try. Everything I write doesn't make it to the Blog though, so don't be judging by what is on here - some of that stuff is old and I really need to do some rewrites!
Friday was a most enjoyable day with my youngest grandchildren - special lunch and then to the park. I will miss them this week as they are on fall break and I won't get to see them everyday, but it will give me some catchup time. I have certainly neglected my major housecleaning this summer as I played with the girls all summer.
As the trees have started shedding their coats, we covered the pool this weekend until the leaves are gone. It looks so desolate when it is covered. Hubby said he would take the cover off later in the year, but I couldn't keep up with all the leaves - I dip - they fall, I dip - they fall. After Thanksgiving I will mulch most of them for the shrubbery and the rest will go on the garden for next spring's planting. I have to burn that garden spot off first - did that last year and it took care of most of the pests this year. Since we plant an early garden, we miss the pests that like the hot days of mid to late summer. I fair better also as I can not work in the heat.
My maternal first cousins get together every three months to keep in touch. For one reason or another, I have missed the first two get togethers so I am so looking forward to seeing the crew in November. The first of us died a year ago and her husband wanted to get to know her cousins better and suggested this as a way of keeping in touch and his asking questions and learning our personalities. I liked the man when I first met him and I like him even more for caring enough to make an effort. I have two cousins who are a great distance from us and we don't get to visit so often, but then there are cousins just up the road that we don't see so often either.
I told a good friend the other day - we are just trying to live. I know that isn't quite right, but it pretty much describes our comings, goings, or just staying home.
Until next time . . .
Happy reading!

A fun look at my experience with gardens, flowers, herbs, and so much more. "I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry." Psalm 40:1 NIV

Time for Reflection
The week before Thanksgiving is always my time of reflection. There is always so much to be thankful for, but there is also so much that I feel I could have done differently. Not a time for regret, just a time of adjusting ones thinking so that in the coming year my actions and reactions can be more positive and fulfilling.
With only a month and a half left in this year, there is not much time left to accomplish great things, but today is the first day - well you know.
I have made new friends and reconnected with old friends this year - there are two that I have spoken with but not really re-established a relationship with and that is a project that I hope to rectify soon. It has brought my heart joy and comfort to see these people again; to remember the joys of youth; and to take many strolls down memory lane. Forty plus years ago we all parted and started on our life journeys. For twelve years our journeys were focused on each other and then we were declared ready to start our life without instruction. It is interesting to see what paths each chose to follow and the changes we have all been through. It is a sad fact that we, as a whole, have not been a healthy group and many have been lost in that 40 years. Dear ones, know that you were missed at our great reunion. Thank you Dawn for bringing much sunshine, smiles and joy into many lives this past year.
Every day my faith becomes deeper and I am in awe of the works of God. God is far from being dead as I am witnessing daily, but the pull of the world on our youth is a frightening thing. Our youth must be guarded and guided to follow in the steps of our Lord. Pray for our youth which is our tomorrow.
Hubby and I have had a healthy year without any major calamities. We experienced the loss of hubby's father this year, but by the grace of God it was not a long, drawn out sickness. Missed by family and friends, his loss had a sobering effect on his family.
We also had two marriages in our family this year which is always a celebration. I am now looking forward to hearing of upcoming births from some of our younger ones. Nothing brings joy like the birth of a child! The first of the grandchildren are entering their teen age years and that is always an interesting time. There are so many changes that a person goes through at this age. It is a most difficult time and one of great change. I love to hear the sound of their voices changing. I know it is frustrating to them and sometimes embarrassing, but it shows they are in transition from childhood to manhood. We have four boys in our group and five girls and I can't wait until these girls reach their age of maturity and the changes they will go through. I am so glad they all have stable parents to guide their thoughts and actions. So much to look forward to!
The families will all gather next week to catch up on "what's happening" and to fill their stomachs with every one's favorite recipes. I look forward to seeing and visiting with each and everyone. My wish for you is a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
Until next time . . .

A Good Parent
Birthing a child does not come with instructions. There is no step by step plan on how to be a good mother and fathering a child is the same. Much is handed down either intentionally or unintentionally from family to family - traditions, religion, values, views on education, morals. Very few families operate alike. Social courtesies, religious beliefs, common manners, study habits, eating habits, all of these are differ between families, some in a major way and others in minor ways. As we grow, develop and learn, we change our views on the way we were raised and the things we were taught and in turn develop our own values.
With time and development, children find many faults in their parents that they were not aware of before. It is amazing when we find that our parents are not the final authority and usually this is the age when we are the ones making the decisions. This is the time when we wonder "Why can't my dad/mom be like so-and-so?" We admire something in someone else and wish it for ourselves or our family. I remember wishing that our family had Bible reading and prayer everynight before bed. My Uncle did this with his family and there was a closeness and a sense of security within the family that I felt my family lacked. But as a parent, even though I started the process it only continued for a few months with many excuses of getting a bath or needing to study taking precedence over the Bible and prayer time. My father would rise at 4:30 every morning and read his Bible for an hour, but did not share this time with his family and we never even thought of interrupting his Bible study. I wish now I had made this a number one priority rather than a something extra.
So what makes a good parent? I believe that if our parents raise us to have the education and ability to be responsible for ourselves, not depending on others, to be of good moral character, to respect others, to live within the law and have a reverent fear of God, then they have done their job. We are all individuals. We all have learned behaviors and inherited traits that determine who we are and who we become. What is very important to one may not make a hill of beans to another. We can set the values for ourselves, but no matter how hard we try we cannot set the values for others - not our children, our parents, or our friends. It is a relief when we realize that we don't have to live with the values of others, but how devastated we feel when our children reject our values - that doesn't mean we don't love them. The parent child relationship is a continually rolling ball from one generation to the next.
What brought this thought process on is a great unknown! As a favorite cuz always says "who knows what she is thinking" and then these little thoughts just jump right up there and run like crazy! I hope you enjoy your day and thanks for dropping in!
